Of our guests staying with us here at the Palmetto, about thirty percent tend to fly and the other seventy percent take the ferry.

Culebra Ferry

Although there is a phone number to make reservations (787) 863-0705), it can be very difficult (nearly impossible) to reach someone in the Fajardo office.

The ferry operates daily (weekends and holidays as well) and the full schedule can be found here:  Culebra Ferry

The cost is $4.50 r/t per person to/from Culebra and please note – there is NO ferry between Culebra and Vieques.

The ferry leaves from Fajardo, located on the eastern part of Puerto Rico. To get to Fajardo from San Juan you can rent a car and drive and then park it in a secure lot (on the right before the ferry terminal-$5.00/day). It is NOT usually permitted to bring a rental on the ferry for insurance purposes. Moreover, it is NOT recommended as priority on the cargo ferry is given to commercial vehicles and then residents.

The ferries can be VERY full (i.e. sold out) during holiday periods, April, and in the summer months with additional travelers from Puerto Rico. The Palmetto Guesthouse can purchase tickets and mail them (for a slight fee) for guests who make reservations in advance. Most other months, the ferries are not full, but being at the dock in Fajardo at least one hour prior to the scheduled departure is recommended.

Culebra Airlines

The fastest, most convenient way to get to Culebra is to fly from the smaller regional airport in San Juan, called Isla Grande. It is about a 15 minute taxi ride from the main international airport and should cost about $15.00 + $1.00/bag.

From there you fly via Flamenco Air (787-721-7332 or 787-724-1818) or Vieques Airlink (888-901-9247) to Culebra. The price is $105 per person round trip and the flight takes ½ hr. ADVANCE RESERVATIONS are always recommended and you will likely have to try several times to reach a reservation agent. Don’t bother with email or leaving a message. You must speak to a person to make a booking.

There are scheduled flights daily with Flamenco Air and Vieques Airlink to/from Culebra/San Juan and Culebra/Ceiba (on the eastern end of the island near Fajardo) as well as charter services available and “on-demand” for routes/times outside of the normal schedules.

For those of you interested in heading the other way, today is the second part – Ferrying from Culebra to Fajardo.

As of November 13, 2008 the fare to get from Culebra to Fajardo is $2.25 one way or $4.50 for a roundtrip.

The passenger and cargo ferry times from Culebra to Fajardo are as follows:

As of October 20, 2008 the correct ferry times between Fajardo and heading to Culebra are as follows:

Passenger ferry from Fajardo to Culebra travels EVERYDAY, weekends included, at the same time -
9:00 a.m.
3:00 p.m
7:00 p.m.

The cargo ferry only runs during the week, meaning Monday through Friday, at the following times -

The distance is about eight tenths of a mile and can be walked in ten to fifteen minutes (if you have eighty pounds of luggage the time will vary). Please note, because one of the roads is one way I have highlighted both in case you are driving.

First off, it is highly recommended that you don NOT take your rental car on the Culebra cargo ferry from Fajardo. In most cases you will actually break the rental contract if you do as it is generally prohibited for insurance reasons. Additionally, it would not be all that uncommon for your car not to get on your designated ferry, as priority is given to commercial vehicles & residents.

Probably your easiest alternative would be to take a taxi, or have a car service meet you at the airport. As of this writing, May 5, 2008 a taxi will cost between $60-$100 and will take between an hour to an hour and a half depending on the traffic (p.s. – Friday afternoons could take even longer). A reputable taxi service that the Palmetto Guesthouse recommends is Al’s Car Public Service. Mr. Alvaro Cuellar speaks English & Spanish & generally charges closer to the $60 range. You can book in advance with Al by phoning 787-590-9001

Lastly, you could rent a car. Leaseway (787) 791-5900 will rent you a one way car from $95 (economy car, which includes their Fajardo drop off fee.They can pick you up at the San Juan International (787) 806-5000.

No matter which option you choose, it is ALWAYS best to phone to confirm & to make arrangements in advance.
