Many times we have had people email us here at the Palmetto Guesthouse asking where they can get fresh local fruits and vegetables on Culebra. The two main grocery stores, Milka and Myra, do a pretty good job of stocking produce.
However if you happen to be on Culebra on a Friday you should make an effort to get to the “fruit and veggie guy.”
He sets up a tent on the corner directly across from Carlos Jeep Rental. Their fruits and vegetables, while not wholly organic, many come from farms on Puerto Rico.
We rescued this sweet chocolate lab the other day after she collapsed in front our house. She is a nice pup but really sick. At this time she is at the vet’s office in Fajardo.
Please, if you know of anyone who is willing to offset the vet care (bill expected to exceed $1500) or who would like to adopt her when she is well, go to the Animal Welfare of Culebra website to donate.
Melissa and Vince came to Culebra and spent one evening at the Palmetto Guesthouse.
Shortly after checking in, Vince asked about special places for a memorable proposal. He found the right spot the next morning on Flamenco beach when he proposed & Melissa accepted!
Although they’d talked over the subject of marriage, Melissa had “no idea” that Vince planned to ask her to be his wife during their Puerto Rican holiday. He did, however, do a great job of picking out just the right ring to fit Melissa’s taste and they two now look forward to a happy life together.

A couple of times a week here at the Palmetto Guesthouse we seem to get an email asking about grocery shopping and markets here on Culebra.
While in Culebra you can find most any item. The two main grocery stores in town (Milka’s & Mayra’s) stock all of the basics and then some. You can find cleaning products to canned goods to wine, beer, and spirits (Milka’s or El Eden) to frozen meats and fish. Each market also has a limited selection of fruits and vegetables available during the week and then on Fridays there is a farmer’s market on the corner by the airport and Carlos’ Jeep with a wide array of produce.

Steve and Honey are entrepreneurs (check out The Science Place) from Atlanta and after two years without a vacation they decided they should come to Culebra and Puerto Rico for some R&R.
Honey’s first impression of Culebra, after a chicken or three had darted in front of the car; “Now where did he (he being Steve) take me this time.” However, from then on things improved drastically! In fact, Steve said, ”We came for the beaches and have gotten so much more.”They literally had Culebrita Island all to themselves and referred to it as “paradisiacal.” When asked to describe Culebra in three words to someone who has not visited they chose:
1. Friendly people
2. Fabulous beaches
3. Serendipity
On their way to the airport they assured us that they would definitely be back!

If it’s cold, snowy, and miserable where you are, Nathan and Becky Smit were in Culebra recently (staying at the Palmetto Guesthouse) and they shot this fantastic video.
During the course of the seven minute video Nathan has captured video and photos from Flamenco Beach, Resaca Beach, Zoni Beach, Carlos Rosario Beach, and Tamarindo…really great stuff!
Recent Palmetto Guesthouse guests, Mike and Darcy, traveled all the way from Portland, Oregon to Culebra to celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary (CONGRATULATIONS!).
It was their first time visiting Puerto Rico and Culebra.
When asked to define Culebra in three words they chose: Beautiful, Rustic and Fun!
Darcy’s favorite part of the trip was visiting Culebrita, she said, ”Because you can do alot of hikes and there are three gorgeous beaches all located on this very small island.” And Mike enjoyed snorkeling at Carlos Rosario and Tamarindo Beach.
Here they are getting ready to depart for a day of fun on their scooter.
Is there a ferry between Culebra & Vieques? (A very common question.)
There is NO ferry between the islands, nor are there water taxis or boats. You would need to ferry back to Fajardo and then take a second ferry over or vise versa.
How about flights between Culebra & Vieques?
At this time, there are also no regularly scheduled flights between the islands, however the airlines (Flamenco, Vieques Airlink, Isla Nena) will sometimes put on flight for enough (4?) passengers. (Call the airlines for specifics.)
